home. dive deeper. resources. glossary of terms glossary of terms Christ-follower - One who believes in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as payment for sin, and strives to live by Christ’s biblical example Covenant - the act of God in freely establishing a mutually binding relationship with humankind Edify - to instruct or improve spiritually; to build up Epistemology - philosophical inquiry into the nature, sources, limits, and methods of gaining knowledge Existentialism - any philosophical system that attempts to define what it means to be human in terms of “existence” (How does a human live?) rather than in terms of “essence” (What is a human?) Fecundity - intellectually productive or inventive General Revelation - a term used to declare that God reveals something about the divine nature through the created order (i.e. nature) Hedonism - the doctrine that pleasure or happiness is the sole or chief in life Holy Spirit - third person of the Trinity Holy - a biblical term generally meaning “to be set apart.” The term is used widely in Scripture to refer to a variety of people and objects alike but ultimately points to God as the One who is set apart in creation Imago Dei - image of God Inerrancy - the idea that Scripture is completely free from errorv Integrity - when what we think/feel/know matches how we act and what we do Jesus Christ - the second person of the Trinity (also referred to as Son of God, Son of Man) who was sent to earth as a man, lived a perfect life, and died on a cross as a sacrifice to wipe away the sin of mankind Lord - another name for God Ministry - a means by which people serve God Repentance - acknowledging and turning away from one’s own sin and guilt before God Sanctification - similar in meaning to “holy” or “set apart.” It is the process whereby Christians are made holy through Christ’s death, and continue to grow into and strive for holiness by cooperating with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit until they enjoy complete conformity to Christ (in heaven). Sin - the fundamental unbelief, distrust, and rejection of God and human displacement of God as the center of reality. The Bible presents sin as both fallen humanity’s state of separation and alienation from God and as an individual’s purposeful disobedience to God’s will. Son of God - a term used to describe Jesus Christ Son of Man - a term used to describe Jesus Christ Special Revelation - God’s divine self-revelation evidenced specifically in salvation history and culminating in the incarnation of Jesus Christ (coming to earth as a man) Spiritual Gift - a special divine empowerment bestowed on each believer by the Holy Spirit to accomplish a given ministry God’s way according to His grace and discernment within the Body of Christ Trinity - the Christian understanding of God as triune. It means that the one divine nature is a unity of three persons and that God is revealed as three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Worship - the act of adoring and praising God, ascribing worth to God as the one who deserves homage and service, often expressed through prayer, psalms, reading and exposition of Scripture, and observance of communion Definitions taken from: Grenz, Stanley, et al.
